There are no guarantees for any of us regarding the coronavirus, even for the non-smokers, and those of us who eat mostly whole food plant based diets! Everyone is at risk. Having said that, here are a few tips on how we can all try to stay healthy and strong during this difficult time:
1. Eliminate meat, dairy, and eggs, as well as added oils and processed foods (at least for the next month or two). The consumption of animal products causes inflammation, which can compromise the immune system. Also, When the gut is exposed to saturated fat, it causes the destruction of the healthy protective bacteria. Basically, the more animal products you consume, the more inflammation, and other health issues you create.
2. Dr. Milton Mills, who is a terrific, and trusted source, acknowledges that although there are many unknown variables regarding the coronavirus, it does appear as though there could be a connection with the severity of symptoms, and selenium deficiency in some patients. Apparently, selenium protects against viral infections and mutations, and it may be that various parts of China are selenium deficient (with regards to the soil). Again, there may or may not be an association, but according to Dr. Mills, a great source for selenium are Brazil nuts (just 3 per day is sufficient). Supplements are available too.
3. Dr. Mills also recommends a plant flavonoid called quercetin. Quercetin has been the subject of longevity research and is used as an anti-inflammatory for several conditions. Foods that are rich in quercetin include dark leafy greens, broccoli, red onions, peppers, apples, grapes, black and green tea, and some fruits including nectarines and raspberries. It is also available as a supplement.
4. Drink lots of water, and stay hydrated. Buy bottled water, or back up water filters.
5. Gargle with salt, or with 1/2 strength hydrogen peroxide on a daily basis.
6. Got Meditation? Yoga? Sleep? and Exercise? 🙂
Stay well everyone!
