Asthma: Causes, Triggers, and Treatments

Asthma is a common chronic condition that affects more than 25 million Americans and one that’s on many people’s minds during the COVID-19 outbreak.

What to do? 1. Ditch Dairy 2. Eat more plants 3. Stay hydrated, and use salt as a natural antihistamine 4. Probiotics

Causes of Asthma:
• Poor diet
• Dairy most common dietary trigger (ditch dairy!)
• Dehydration can exacerbate
• GI health contributes
• Overstimulation of immune system ‐ allergies, chronic viral or bacterial infections
• Overuse of antibiotics – destroys beneficial bacteria, compromises immune system
• Excess weight contributes to increased inflammation

Effective Treatment Options:
• Dietary excellence (eliminate or greatly reduce animal products)
• Eliminate dairy (you will not miss it, I promise!)
• Drink enough water
• Use salt as a natural antihistamine
• Repair GI tract with probiotics

Triggers other than Dairy:
• Medications such as aspirin, nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and beta‐blockers
• Acid reflux – acid inhaled through the back of the throat burns the bronchial tubes and causes symptoms of asthma
